The APL Trust fund is a UK-based charitable (public benefit) company in the process of forming, with the objective of promoting the advancement of education and research in the fields of science and mathematics by supporting, funding, and raising awareness of APL and APL-adjacent research.

Operation

Contributors are free to become members, and will thereby be allowed to make proposals and vote for projects or persons to receive funding, and for the board. Votes carry equal weight, not based on donation amount or (for corporate entities) organisation size.

The fund's support for a chosen person or project is envisioned to be in the range EUR 1000–50000. Its board of directors would define requirements of the beneficiary, in terms of goals and deliverables. The board could also establish a claimable bounties when it identifies needs within science or mathematics for particular applications.

Just like the APL Wiki, the APL Trust Fund must define what it considers "APL". In the words of Gitte Christensen, "everything that looks like APL and tastes like APL is obviously a candidate for support", but as opposed to the content guidelines of APL Wiki, J is considered an APL too.

Establishment

The fund was first announced as part of Gitte Christensen's last Dyalog User Meeting opening talk.[1] Details were presented and discussed at the BAA Webinar on 18 Jul 2024, which was held as an Extraordinary General Meeting.

An initial board of directors, comprised of the initial donors, will make decisions as to which projects or persons to fund, and which persons or corporate entities to add to the board. Any person, or corporate entity willing to act as a Director, may be appointed by ordinary resolution (members vote) or by resolution of the Directors.

Although not always necessary, potential members and Directors will usually be required to make an unconditional and irrevocable donation to the charity on approval to join.

Dyalog Ltd has pledged a yearly support of GBP 5000.
